The Mavericks Fired Jason Kidd… But The REAL Problem Started with the Luka Doncic Trade

Ladies and gentlemen… the Dallas Mavericks finally made it official.
Hall of Fame point guard Jason Kidd is OUT as head coach of the Mavericks after five seasons in Dallas.
And in the words of the organization itself:
“We have mutually agreed to part ways with head coach Jason Kidd.”
MUTUALLY?
Come on now.
That’s corporate America talk for "Yeahhhhhh… we’re going in another direction.”
Translation?
Jason Kidd got fired.
And honestly?
After the last two years in Dallas, this was about as shocking as finding out Texas is hot in July.
The Luka Trade Changed EVERYTHING
Let’s stop dancing around it.
The moment Dallas traded Luka Doncic, the clock started ticking on everybody in that building.
EVERYBODY.
Front office.
Coaching staff.
Equipment managers.
The dude refilling the Gatorade cooler.
Everybody should’ve been nervous.
Because when you trade away a generational superstar before he even hits his prime, you better have a master plan cooked up hotter than Sunday dinner at Big Mama’s house.
Instead?
The Mavericks looked like a franchise trying to assemble IKEA furniture without the instructions.
And Jason Kidd ended up being the guy left holding the Allen wrench.
From NBA Finals To Missing The Playoffs?!
Now let’s be fair.
Kidd’s tenure in Dallas wasn’t all bad.
Not even close.
The man took the Mavericks to the NBA Finals during the 2023-24 season. He helped establish Dallas as a legitimate contender again.
And throughout his five seasons, Kidd compiled a 205-205 overall record.
But the ending?
OH, it got ugly.
Here’s the résumé over the last five years:
2022 — Western Conference Finals
2023 — Missed playoffs
2024 — NBA Finals appearance
2025 — Missed playoffs
2026 — Missed playoffs
That’s basketball whiplash.
One minute you’re fighting for championships.

The next minute you’re drafting lottery picks and praying for miracles like somebody left sage burning in the locker room.
Cooper Flagg Is SPECIAL
Now, to be fair, Dallas DID luck into drafting Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick.
The kid can BALL!
Flagg averaged 21 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.2 steals per game in his rookie campaign. He led the Mavs in points, rebounds, assists and steals.
Not only that, but the NBA announced on Wednesday that Flagg has unanimously been selected to the 2025-26 NBA All-Rookie First Team.
Flagg (19 years, 112 days) becomes the second-youngest player in NBA history to garner All-Rookie First Team honors behind LeBron James.
But asking a rookie to immediately help rescue a franchise spiraling after the Luka trade?
That’s pressure hotter than fish grease at a family reunion.
Especially when your other cornerstone pieces include:
Kyrie Irving coming off a torn ACL
Anthony Davis trying to stay healthy
Klay Thompson getting older
A roster still searching for identity
And let me say this carefully…
Depending on Anthony Davis to survive a full NBA season healthy is like buying gas station sushi and expecting peace afterward.
You’re living dangerously.
Masai Ujiri Said WHAT He Needed To Say
New Mavericks president Masai Ujiri stepped to the podium and owned the decision.
“I think it’s very fair to say this decision is on me.”
Respect for taking accountability.
Because too often executives hide behind vague PR statements while everybody else takes the bullets.
Ujiri called it a “very, very tough decision,” while explaining Dallas needed a “clean slate” moving forward.
Translation?
He wants HIS people.
His culture.
His vision.
And apparently, Jason Kidd wasn’t part of it.
Let’s Not Forget Who Jason Kidd IS
Now hold on.
Before folks start acting like Jason Kidd forgot basketball overnight, let’s relax.
This is one of the greatest point guards the NBA has EVER seen.
A Hall of Famer.
NBA champion.
10-time All-Star.
One of the smartest basketball minds walking this Earth.
And despite the criticism he catches sometimes, Kidd has now coached the:
Brooklyn Nets
Milwaukee Bucks
Dallas Mavericks
He’s led teams deep into the postseason multiple times.
The league is NOT letting a basketball mind like that sit unemployed for long.
Somebody’s already plotting.
Trust me.
Final Thoughts: Dallas Better Hope This Works
Because if this new Cooper Flagg era doesn’t turn Dallas back into a contender FAST?
Oh, Mavericks fans are going to keep looking at that Luka Doncic trade like it was the basketball version of trading away your mansion for a studio apartment and a coupon booklet.
And let’s be real for a second — unlike last season, Dallas can’t even lean on Anthony Davis anymore after shipping him to the Washington Wizards.
So now the pressure is even HEAVIER on this front office to get things right.
The good news?
Cooper Flagg already looks like the real deal.
The kid just won Rookie of the Year and was unanimously voted First-Team All-Rookie. That’s not normal rookie behavior. That’s future-superstar activity.
But one young star alone ain’t enough in the loaded Western Conference.
Not when Kyrie Irving is still working his way back to full strength.
Not when the Mavericks are still trying to figure out their long-term identity post-Luka.
And not when Dallas also owns the No. 9 overall pick in this year’s draft, meaning this offseason could define the next decade of the franchise.
That’s why firing Jason Kidd feels bigger than just moving on from a coach.
This is a full organizational reset.
